Gentrification Explained

The Urban Displacement Project at University of California-Berkeley aims to help communities understand the gentrification pressures facing their neighborhoods and take effective action to mitigate them. The project website offers a “gentrification explainer” video discusses the historical conditions that underlie gentrification, the policies and practices that encourage it today, and the way it impacts communities, including physical and cultural displacement.

The video is accompanied by several other useful resources. A maps page lets users explore how and where displacement is happening in the Bay Area region, Southern California and the Portland, Oregon area. Other resources include research briefs on gentrification and displacement, case studies and a “displacement explainer” video.
