Access Professional Development Without Leaving Your Desk

Community development practitioners, funders and supporters have talked in recent years about the need to build “bench strength” in the industry as the wave of founding directors nears retirement age. At the same time, nonprofit budgets are increasingly stretched thin just attempting to meet demand for their programs and services. As a result there is not a lot of money – or time – left over to send staff to training and build their leadership skills. Fortunately, there are some online options for high-quality, certification-eligible courses in leadership and management that will not break the bank.

Neighborworks America, well-known for its Nonprofit Training Institutes (NTI), has online, self-guided courses in nonprofit leadership and management, available for a fraction of the cost of attending the NTI in person. Courses such as Board Oversight and Governance and Marketing Your Programs and Organization count toward professional certification and can be completed at the user’s desired pace.

The Society for Nonprofits offers several courses in the basics of nonprofit leadership, such as Board Governance and Strategic Planning. The complement of eight courses will earn users credit toward the Certificate of Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership and Management, jointly awarded by the Society for Nonprofits and Michigan State University's Department of Community Sustainability.

The Foundation Center offers online training, from live and recorded webinars to self-guided “eLearning” courses. Some are free and some require a modest fee (usually under $100). There is even an option to create a customized training course to fit your needs. Mostly focused on fund development, Leadership and Management training courses include Your Board and Fundraising and Diversity & Inclusion: Walking the Talk.

Nonprofit Quarterly has a regularly updated series of webinars on a number of leadership topics, including The Completely Revised Guide to Great Board Recruitment and Nonprofit Leadership Transitions and Organizational Stability: An Updated Approach that Changes the Landscape, which offers a new approach to thinking about leadership transition.
